And when you're around super-sensitive people, you cannot relax and be spontaneous because you have no idea what's going to upset them next. And then there are all those people who complain about insensitive humor and all. And in fact, it's a blast from beginning to end. But the fact that the film departs from the original book, doesn't make it automatically bad. It might not be, I've no idea, I haven't read the original stories, it wasn't a thing in my country, in my childhood. some people complain it's not true to the original. and yet, I see a mediocre rating on IMDB. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Then - and this was probably the worst of all the awful things that followed - Turgut pressed his friend's hand to his own heart and broke out in a keening wail, words that seemed to come to us from the depths of a history not only too ancient but too alien for me to distinguish their syllables, a howl of grief akin to the muezzin's call to prayer, which we had heard from the minarets in the city - except that Turgut's wail sounded more like a summons to hell - a string of horror-stricken notes that seemed to arise from the memory of a thousand Ottoman camps, a million Turkish soldiers. ![]() ![]() At the same time, Gran makes these occurrences intentionally banal to make the reader question all the times they've acted out of character, shrugged off an unexplained noise in their home, spotted things out of the corner of their eye that seemed to vanish as soon as they were noticed. Once past the point of no return, the victim is forced to share his/her body with an evil entity, watch all the hope and happiness of his/her old life slip irrevocably away, and accept the consequences of unspeakable actions committed by the entity that's decided to stake its claim on him/her.
